Local MP Richard Holden is a strong supporter of the government’s Nationality and Borders Bill, which is being debated by the Commons today. We fear many of the humane amendments made by the Lords will be defeated. Holden lobbied hard for hosting the Home Office’s proposed women’s detention centre in his constituency, against the self evident unsuitability of the location and the history of the site, not to mention its entirely unjustified purpose of locking up vulnerable women asylum seekers indefinitely (no other country in Europe does this).
