This video taken by a supporter captures the atmosphere of our national demonstration in Durham on 14th May. In the course of three hours members of No to Hassockfield, alongside three other organising groups and many more supporters, heard directly from speakers telling us of their lived experience of detention. Mostly women, they were powerful witnesses to the injustice of the detention system in our country.

Samba, singing and poetry heightened the speakers’ messages, all reminding us of the women locked up right now in Hassockfield aka Derwentside Immigration Removal Centre. Along with the thousands of other sanctuary seekers experiencing our Home Secretary’s Hostile Environment policies in action.
We know the imprisoned women in the IRC live in constant fear of unlawful deportation.
And now that fear is turning into harrowing reality: news has reached us that a woman has just been deported from the IRC.
Buoyed by the solidarity we all experienced in Durham, we are more determined than ever to oppose and end such injustice.
