The MP for North West Durham promotes the plan to use the former youth offenders’ institution as a detention site for 80 women and believes that the “overwhelming majority” of his constituents are in favour of this plan. He claims that it will bring 150 or 200 “quality jobs” to the area and £10 million pounds a year to the local economy.
